Commissions
The Process
The commissioning of art is an act of trust, and that trust is something we take seriously. Prior to starting a piece we ask the collector some simple questions about what they hope to see in what we create for them.
First, we establish the size of the painting. Then we establish scale. A closeup view on a large canvas will evoke different thoughts and feelings than a wide angled landscape on a small canvas.
Once that is established we ask the collector to describe the feeling or vibe they are looking for. A response might be “the exhilaration of being somewhere remote” or “a morning stroll down a wooded path”. Even simple responses such as “pensive” or “wild” can help us shape the scene.
Lastly, we’ll ask for a couple examples of photography or perhaps one of the pieces in our portfolio which speaks to them. The most important thing for us, after all, is that the collector feels a connection to the piece we create for them.
This is all we typically expect. We want to ensure we understand what a collector is looking for, but we prefer to keep the descriptions vague enough that the piece is able to develop organically. These motes of inspiration combine with our own experiences and the result is, we hope, something uniquely shared between artist and collector.
